Our Economy

U.S. Senator Jim Bunning today issued the following statement after voting against the Conference Report to the economic stimulus bill.

"With the passage of this so-called stimulus package today, the era of big government is officially back in Washington. This bill is supposed to be about creating jobs and stimulating our economy, but all this bill offers is spending, spending and more spending. American families and small businesses deserve better.

"If we really want to stimulate the economy, we need to focus our attention on tax cuts for individuals, investment, and businesses. We need to enact legislation that will have a direct and immediate impact. We need a bill that will create more jobs through targeted tax relief; not a bill that spends money on programs that offer no immediate return to the American taxpayers.

"There is no question that many Americans are suffering right now because of the current financial crisis and something needs to be done, but this bill does very little to help those who need it most. The answer to fixing a problem that was created by too much debt is not more debt. Our children and grandchildren will be paying for the Democrats’ big government deficit spending bill for years to come.

"This is a trillion dollar bill that we are dealing with here and yet Members of Congress were given less than 24 hours to review it before we started voting. It is a bill that was crafted behind closed doors in a completely partisan manner. That is not good government. America cannot afford to waste a trillion dollars.

"Since he took office President Obama has preached transparency and bipartisanship, but if this bill is any evidence, members of his party in Congress didn’t get the message. While I pray that some good will come of this bill, I have very little hope for it. Maybe Speaker Pelosi can tell us what a socialist economy is really like after she gets back from her eight day European vacation."
